Excerpt from Hudson Taylor in Early Years The Growth of a Soul
This book makes no claim to being anything but a true and grateful record of the Lord's dealings with our dear father in his early years. It is not fiction, though the form in which it has come to us is unusual, perhaps, for a biography. It is the faithful story of the growth of a soul in the know ledge and love of God. Drawn mainly from Mr. Taylor's own letters and recollections, which are freely quoted, it has been pondered and prayed over until it seems to have lived again in our hearts.
Many a time as it has grown to completion, in spite of hindrances from without and within that only the power of God has overcome, we have felt profoundly that the place whereon we stood was holy ground. Most gratefully do we thank all who have waited so patiently for this book, and to whose help in prayer we know it is largely due that it appears at length. May they find in its pages some fragrance of the life they loved, because it brought them nearer to God, and strengthened them in seeking to live for His glory and the good of many.

With my apology, I have to echo some of the other reviews here: Next to the Bible, these two volume biographies of Hudson Taylor Hudson Taylor in Early Years- The Growth of a Soul - Volume 1 and Hudson Taylor and The China Inland Mission: Volume 2: The Growth of a Work of God have had a profound impact on my life. As I read this account of Hudson Taylor's life, I marveled how God used this humble man with all his physical limitations to accomplish His purpose of reaching millions in China who had never heard of Christ. The China Inland Mission was formed by Hudson Taylor in the 19th century and today the name has been changed to " Overseas Missonary Fellowship ", which still send their people to the many all over the world who need the saving grace and the resurrections power of the Lord. This biography tells of the inner struggles of this man which are much like all our struggles when we desire to walk with God, to know Him and to be used by Him. It would be easy to pass off his life as something that happened long ago in a different world and in a different time, but our culture today, with all its materialism and emphasis on self, independence and success in the world, needs Christ as much as the millions in China did during the 19th century. I hope with all my heart that people will be motivated to read this biography and also hope that it will have the same profound impact on lives as it did on my own life.

God at work in Hudson Taylor's life - He can be in yours, too, if you let Him in. jb
this bio is the second half of his first..
This is the account of a life so wholly given to God that it puts to shame 99% of those who call our selves Christian. This is a great encouragement for me to give myself more fully to God.
There is something edifying in this book for all ages and in every age. What a privilege to have read it..
For anyone who wants their faith strengthened and who enjoys Christian biographies this is a wonderful book. I will be reading it again.
Lots of little typos due to the transfer process. This book I found as a recommendation in the book "10 People Every Christian Should Know". He said this book and volume 2 were out of print but he had read them and wish they were still available. I was pleasantly surprised to find them on when I typed Hudson Taylor's name. Many jewels of wisdom are to be found. I finished Volume I today so now on to volume II. It is a long book but well worth the investment of your time.
Next to the Bible, this two-volume biography of Hudson Taylor is the most important book I have ever read. Yes, that is a bold statement. But the impact it had on me was profound. I always caution new readers of this book to not let the first part of it get them bogged down. The author is meticulous about documentation and so the narrative moves very slowly. But the documentation is necessary to lay a firm foundation for the rest of the book. Trust me, making it through the first part of the book will be well worth your efforts.
As we live our lives for Christ, it is easy to see great men and women of faith and compare our lives to theirs. The danger in that type of comparison is believing that "we can't get there from here." We may look at what God did through these people and think they are some kind of "super Christian", a different "breed" than normal mankind. This is precisely why great biographies are so important. They allow us to watch as God grows someone into a mighty warrior for His Kingdom.
And that is exactly what this book does. We meet Hudson Taylor when he is very young and then we are allowed a window onto his life as he learns to walk with the Lord. We see how the Lord calls him to holiness, by always making the very best choice in any given situation. As his "spiritual muscles" are developed, he is trusted with more and more responsibility. Through his faithful obedience, the Lord grows him into a tool that changes the world.
Part Two of the biography is called Hudson Taylor and The China Inland Mission Volume 2 The Growth of a Work of God. It details how the Lord used a faithful man to help change the nation of China.
I have never in my life felt such a desire to grow in holiness as I did after reading these two volumes. I would highly recommend these books.
